| Lansoprazole is used to treat
ulcers; gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a condition in
which backward flow of acid from the stomach causes heartburn
and injury of the food pipe (esophagus); and conditions where
the stomach produces too much acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison
syndrome. Lansoprazole is used in combination with other
medications to eliminate H. pylori, a bacteria that causes
ulcers. Lansoprazole is in a class of medications called
proton-pump inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of
acid made in the stomach. |
| Misoprostol is taken to prevent
stomach ulcers in patients taking anti-inflammatory drugs,
including aspirin. Misoprostol may also be used for other
conditions as determined by your doctor. Misoprostol helps the
stomach protect itself against acid damage. It also decreases
the amount of acid produced by the stomach. Misoprostol must
not be used during pregnancy . It has been shown to cause
contractions and bleeding of the uterus. Misoprostol may also
cause miscarriage. Patients must be advised of the
abortifacient property. |

(gastroesophageal reflux disease.) Ranitidine differs from
antacids, which help to neutralize excess stomach acid that
has already been produced. |
