Diabetes Medications by Pharmacy |
|
Gliclazide |
Brand / Generic |
| Gliclazide Generic Diamicron ® is an oral
antidiabetic agent for treatment of type 2 diabetes.
Gliclazide stimulates insulin secretion from functional
pancreatic #946-cells and increases the sensitivity of the
#946-cells to a glucose stimulus some residual #946-cell
function is therefore necessary. Gliclazide restores the
diminished first-phase of insulin secretion noted in
non-insulin dependant diabetes mellitus. |
| Glimepiride (Generic Amaryl®) is a
sulfonylurea that stimulates your pancreas to make more
insulin and also makes your body more sensitive to insulin.
Glimepiride may be used with or without insulin. Glimepiride
lowers blood glucose (sugar) by stimulating the release of
insulin from the pancreas gland. Other diabetes medicines
are sometimes used in combination with Glimepiride if needed
Glimepiride does not work in type 1 (insulin-dependent)
diabetes mellitus because in this condition, the pancreas
gland is not capable of making or releasing insulin.
Glimepiride is not recommended for use in CHILDREN as safety
and effectiveness have not been confirmed. |
Metformin (Generic Glucophage ®) is an oral
medication used along with a diet and exercise program to
control high blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes.
With Type 2 diabetes, insulin produced by the pancreas is
not able to get sugar into the cells of the body where it
can work properly . Metformin does not help patients who
have insulin-dependent or type 1 diabetes because they
cannot produce insulin from their pancreas gland. Their
blood glucose is best controlled by insulin injections.
Metformin works by helping restore your body's proper
response to the insulin you naturally produce, and by
decreasing the amount of sugar that your liver makes and
that your stomach/intestines absorb. Controlling high blood
sugar helps prevent heart disease, strokes, kidney disease,
blindness, circulation problems, and sexual function
problems. |
|
Pioglitazone Hydrochloride |
|
| Pioglitazone Hydrochloride (Generic Actos®)
is an oral antidiabetic agent for treatment of type 2
diabetes. Pioglitazone effectively reduces insulin
resistance, fasting insulin levels, and blood glucose, along
with healthy eating and physical activity, works by helping
the body use its naturally produced insulin, or administered
insulin in type 2 diabetes, to help use glucose as a fuel
and reduce the harmful buildup of glucose. |
| Rosiglitazone maleate (Generic Avandia®) is
an oral antidiabetic agent for treatment of type 2 diabetes.
Rosiglitazone maleate is an insulin-sensitizing drug called—
a TZD. TZDs target a special receptor site at the center of
certain cells. This decreases the cells resistance to
insulin and allows more sugar to enter. As more sugar enters
the cells, sugar and insulin levels in the bloodstream drop.
This results in lower blood sugar levels. |

Avandia,
Rosiglitazone |
| Actos (pioglitazone) is used to treat
type 2 diabetes by reducing the resistance your body has
to insulin. |
| Amaryl (glimepiride) is a
sulfonylurea used to treat diabetes mellitus (sugar
diabetes). |
| Avandia (rosiglitazone) reduces insulin
resistance by helping to make your body more sensitive to
the natural insulin it produces. |
| Diabinese (chlorpropamide) is a
sulfonylurea used to treat diabetes. |
| Glucophage (metformin) is a
biguanide used to treat diabetes mellitus (sugar
diabetes) in patients who may or may not also require
insulin. |
| Glucophage XR (metformin xr) is a
biguanide-type medicine used along with a diet and
exercise program to control high blood sugar in patients. |
| Glucotrol (glipizide) is a
sulfonylurea used to treat diabetes mellitus (sugar
diabetes). |
| Glucovance (metformin + glyburide) is a
combination of 2 drugs that attack high blood sugar levels
in several ways. |
| Micronase (glyburide) is a
sulfonylurea used to treat diabetes mellitus (sugar
diabetes). |
| Starlix (nateglinide) is a blood
glucose-lowering agent used alone or in combination
with metformin to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. |
| Amaryl is an oral medication used with diet
and exercise to treat Type 2 (noninsulin-dependent) diabetes
(formerly "adult-onset"). Glimepiride may be used with or
without insulin. |
| Avandamet - 2mg/500mg 56 Tablets Glaxo Smith Kline |
Metformin/Rosiglitazone |
| Avandamet is manufactured by
GlaxoSmithKline Inc. This medicine is an insulin resistance
reducer and biguanide combination used along with a diet and
exercise program to control high blood sugar in diabetic
patients. Controlling high blood sugar helps prevent heart
disease, strokes, kidney disease, blindness, and circulation
problems, as well as sexual function problems (impotence).
Use of this medicine is not recommended with insulin
therapy. Avandamet is an oral medication used to control
blood sugar levels in people with type 2
(non-insulin-dependent) diabetes. It contains two drugs
commonly used to lower blood sugar, rosiglitazone (Avandia)
and metformin (Glucophage). Avandamet replaces the need to
take these two drugs separately. It is also used when
treatment with Glucophage alone doesn't work. Avandamet is
not, however, meant to take the place of weight loss or diet
and exercise. You should continue to follow the regimen your
doctor recommends. Blood sugar levels are ordinarily
controlled by the body's natural supply of insulin, which
helps sugar move out of the bloodstream and into the cells
to be used for energy. People who have type 2 diabetes do
not make enough insulin or do not respond normally to the
insulin their bodies make, causing a buildup of unused sugar
in the bloodstream. Avandamet helps remedy this problem in
two ways: by decreasing your body's production of sugar and
making your body more sensitive to its own insulin supply.
Avandamet does not increase the body's production of
insulin. |

drugs called thiazolidinediones. These drugs work by
increasing your bodys sensitivity to insulin, a substance
your body produces to help control blood sugar levels.

| Insulin glargine is a type of insulin.
Insulin is one of many hormones that help the body turn the
food we eat into energy. This is done by using the glucose
(sugar) in the blood as quick energy. Also, insulin helps us
store energy that we can use later. When you have type 2
diabetes mellitus, your body does not produce enough
insulin, or the insulin produced is not used properly. This
causes you to have too much sugar in your blood. Like other
types of insulin, insulin glargine is used to keep your
blood sugar level close to normal. Insulin glargine is a
long-acting insulin that works slowly over about 24 hours.
You may have to use insulin glargine in combination with
another type of insulin or with a type of oral diabetes
medicine to keep your blood sugar under control. |
